La Vernia sits east of San Antonio along highway 87. The town center is a short 30 minute drive from downtown San Antonio and offers a friendly suburban feel with many amenities of city life. La Vernia sits on the south bank for the Cibolo Creek and has a population of around 1,000. The city was initial settled in 1850, and saw an influx of German and Polish immigrants late in the 19 century.
La Vernia students are served by the La Vernia Independent School District (LVISD). La Vernia High School is home to Bears athletics. The schools in the city generally rank above average in performance.
There are a handful of restaurants and shops in La Vernia. Residents also take advantage of Calaveras Lake, a large reservoir that’s perfect for boating and fishing, camping or strolling on the shoreline. There is also sports fields, playgrounds and outdoor activities at La Vernia City Park including the Bluebonnet Festival and Christmas Tree lighting festivities.
